“Archery Summit’s 2011 Pinot Noir Arcus Estate is another of their wines of this vintage to evince blue fruit character – blueberry and boysenberry, initially tinged with sandalwood and cardamom – that I don’t often find in this vintage. Fresh ginger and black pepper offer invigorating inflection, yet don’t detract at all from the underlying soothing influence of a polished, silken texture. A humus-like note and tincture of iodine contribute some darkness and intrigue – and a hint of caramel complimentary sweetness – to a lusciously long finish.” – David Schildknecht

“Debuting solo in this vintage, the 2011 Pinot Noir Archer’s Edge issues from vines Archery Summit planted in 2007 on a 7 acre site between the Archery Summit Estate and Renegade Ridge Estate vineyards. This second crop off the site constituted a mere 150 cases – all matured in Chassin barriques of which only one or two were new. Sappy, sweetly ripe Maine blueberry and cassis are tinged with cardamom and mace on a polished, texturally subtly silken yet at the same time bright and enervating palate. There are a stimulating twist of candied lemon rind as well as a tart berry tang to the finish, and the absence of salinity such as marked the corresponding Renegade Ridge bottling is compensated for by yet purer, juicier fruit persistence. I imagine that this will perform well through at least 2017.” – David Schildknecht

“Tart and penetrating cranberry and holly berry distillate are accented with tamarind, licorice, and toasted oak in the nose and concentrated palate of the 2011 Pinot Noir Archery Summit Estate. In something of a departure from what I take to be vintage typicity, this displays an opaque sense of density and a measure of gum-numbing tannin. But the vigorous and still sappy finish to this robust Pinot certainly makes an impressive statement, and it ought to merit following for at least the next half dozen years.” – David Schildknecht

“Archery Summit’s 2011 Pinot Noir Renegade Ridge – which received 50% new wood (though a very different – and, I’d say, finer – mix of tonneliers than the corresponding Premier Cuvee) – evinces a concentration of sour cherry strongly influenced by its pit, and laced in very vintage-typical fashion with high-toned citrus oils, as well as sassafras. Firm in feel but satisfyingly juicy, this picks up a peppery bite as well as mouthwatering salinity that lend invigoration to a lingering finish. The tannic grip here doesn’t interfere at all with drinking pleasure, and I expect that this will show well through at least 2017.” – David Schildknecht
