2007 Looney Vineyard
| $85. ($68 A-List) |
ORIGIN: Looney Vineyard is located in one of the Willamette Valley's newest (and smallest) AVAs, the Ribbon Ridge AVA. Planted in 2000, Looney Vineyard slopes gently to the south and southeast between 360 and 550 feet in elevation. On sedimentary soils, it produces an exciting addition to our portfolio of Oregon Pinot Noirs.
VINEYARD: The grapes for the 2007 Looney Vineyard were hand harvested between September 26 and 29, 2007, from nine separate blocks containing Dijon clones 115 and 667 as well as Martini, Wadenswil and Pommard clones.
WINEMAKING: The grapes were hand picked and hand sorted to two stainless steel, open-top fermentors. The fruit was soaked cold for six and 10 days respectively, then fermented entirely by indigenous yeasts under temperature controlled conditions. Vats were punched down manually one to three times per day during fermentation then let to soak for additional post-fermentation maceration. After a total of 20 days in tank, the wine was sent by gravity to 60% new French oak François Freres, Sirgue and Sylvain barrels for aging where it remained for 11 months. The wine was then racked and blended into a stainless steel tank until bottling on January 1, 2009, without fining or filtration.
TASTING NOTES: This wine opens with a profusion of black plum, blackberry and red currant. There is spice box and rosewood here along with a lift of lilac and grapey confection reminiscent of purple saltwater taffy. The palate is concentrated and layered with a depth of tannin and texture that delivers weight and compelling fruit with power and preciosity. Here blue raspberry meets pluot with vanilla bean and cherry skin juiciness. The finish resonates with texture and confection.
