ORIGIN: Archery Summit Estate is the vineyard that surrounds our winery in the Dundee Hills. This 16 acre vineyard was planted at Archery Summit’s inception in 1993 and is an extension of our efforts to establish the best combinations of vines and rootstocks with soil and mesoclimate, and exemplifies our continued pursuit to craft America’s premier Pinot Noir.
VINEYARD: Archery Summit Estate is a gently sloping, south-facing vineyard that surrounds our winery in the Dundee Hills. The grapes, a combination of Pommard and Dijon clones 115, 114, and 113, were hand harvested from September 10-October 5, 2004. Our vineyards are farmed meticulously and sustainably, ensuring the highest possible quality of fruit.
WINEMAKING: The grapes were hand picked, hand sorted and fermented in both wooden and stainless steel open top fermentors using an average of 22% whole clusters. The fruit was soaked cold for 5-10 days then fermented entirely by indigenous yeasts under temperature controlled conditions. Vats were manually punched down one to three times per day. After limited post fermentation maceration and total tank times of 30 days, the wine was sent by gravity to 80% new French oak barrels for aging. After 14 months barrel aging, the wine was bottled without fining or filtration in January of 2006.
TASTING NOTES: This wine opens with perfumed and inviting aromas of black plum, black cherry, cigar box and rose petals. There is a seductive earthiness on the mid-palate penetrated by brooding notes red currant and dark chocolate. The wine is supple, focused and satisfying. Well structured, the depths of flavor finish long, leaving hints of spice cake, dark fruits and cedar. The 2004 Archery Summit Estate Pinot Noir is a wine with penetrating purity and focus for serious collectors, and with proper cellaring may be enjoyed for the next 8-12 years.
This vintage produced 655 six-bottle cases, 120 magnums, and 30 3.0 L formats.
