 Description   Press Acclaim

ORIGIN: A true marriage of Burgundian tradition with Oregon terroir is displayed in this exquisite Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from Archery Summit Estate, the vineyard surrounding our winery in the Red Hills of Dundee. This 16-acre vineyard was planted at Archery Summit’s inception in 1993. It is the culmination of our extensive research in establishing the best combinations of vines, rootstock, soils and microclimates and exemplifies our continued pursuit to craft America’s premier Pinot Noir.

VINEYARD: The grapes were harvested by hand from September 27-October 2, 2003. The 2003 Archery Summit Estate Pinot Noir is a blend of Pommard clones and Dijon clones 114 and 115, all grown on our south-facing Archery Summit Estate vineyard. Our vineyards are farmed organically, which ensures highest possible quality of the fruit. The 2003 vintage produced wines with rich intensity.

WINEMAKING: The grapes were hand-sorted and fermented with 30% whole clusters to showcase the ripe fruit. Prior to allowing fermentation to proceed, the fruit was cold-soaked for five to ten days to aid in the extraction of color, tannin and flavor compounds. Primary fermentation was conducted in a combination of oak and stainless steel tanks entirely by indigenous yeasts. During fermentation, tanks were manually punched down one to three times per day. The 2003 Archery Summit Estate was aged in 87% new François Frères oak barrels for 16 months and was moved throughout our facility entirely by gravity. This gentle handling of our Pinot Noir protects the wine’s subtle nuances. Bottling was conducted on June 3, 2004, without fining or filtration.

TASTING NOTES: The 2003 Archery Summit Estate Pinot Noir opens with inviting aromas of black cherry, black plum, violets and rose hips. There is a seductive earthiness on the mid-palate penetrated by bright notes of marionberry, black currant and dark chocolate. The wine is generous, complex and satisfying. Well structured, the depths of flavor finish long leaving hints of spice cake, twig tea and plum. The 2003 Archery Summit Estate Pinot Noir is a complex and focused wine for serious collectors, and may be cellared for five to ten years.
This vintage produced 718 six-bottle cases, 120 1.5 L bottles, and 30 3.0 L bottles.
