ORIGIN: A true marriage of Burgundian clones and tradition with Oregon terroir is displayed in this exquisite Pinot Noir blended from the estate vineyard surrounding our winery in the Red Hills of Dundee. We are pleased to present the 1997 Archery Summit Estate in our continuing pursuit to craft America’s premier Pinot Noir.
VINEYARD: All grapes from this single vineyard with primarily a south to southwest exposure come from Dijon clones 115, 114, 113, and 777. The very steep Jory soil contributes to the great ripeness of fruit and depth of the wine. The fruit was thinned to 1.4 tons per acre to develop intense, concentrated flavors and hand harvested in late September 1997.
WINEMAKING: Crafted in our 100% gravity flow facility, this wine was vinified by cold soaking the grapes with 40% whole clusters and native yeast fermentation. The cap was gently punched down one to three times per day. After aging in 100% new, heavily toasted François Frères French oak barrels for 17 months, the wine was bottled in February 1999, unfined and unfiltered.
TASTING NOTES: The rich dark Burgundy color of the 1997 Archery Summit Estate leads to complex aromas of cassis, black cherries, ripe raspberries, wild strawberries, minerals, exotic spices, oak and the classic Oregonian Pinot Noir element of clean earth. A wide mid-palate is enveloped by fruit. Ripe tannins buttress the fruit and pull the wine to an extremely long finish. This wine will grow even more graceful with extended cellaring for at least ten years and is destined to become a necessity for serious collectors.
This vintage only produced 379 cases, available in our unique four-bottle laydown box, and was offered in 3-liter bottles in limited quantities.
