1997 Red Hills Estate Pinot Noir

ORIGIN: Our 1997 Red Hills Estate is the quintessential Oregon Pinot Noir. The Red Hills Estate vineyard with moderate slopes, shallow Jory soils, and southern exposure produces one of Archery Summit’s finest “vineyard designated” wines. As one of the premier sites in the Red Hills of Dundee, our Red Hills Estate is destined to take its place as one of the world’s great vineyards.

VINEYARD: The Jory soils and great exposure to the sun provide ripeness of fruit and profound rich flavors and texture in this Pinot Noir. From the original 1977 planting of the Pommard clone and a small amount of our new planting from Dijon clones 115, 113 and 777, the grapes were thinned to less than one ton per acre to develop intense, concentrated flavors and hand harvested in late September 1997.

WINEMAKING: This wine was vinified by cold soaking the grapes with 40% whole clusters. During fermentation the cap was gently punched down one to three times per day. The wine was aged in 100% new, heavily toasted François Frères French oak barrels for 13 months. Crafted entirely by using gravity, this wine was bottled in November 1998, unfined and unfiltered.

TASTING NOTES: Big, dark and powerful in color, you’ll find powerful aromas of black fruits, plums, blackberries, and black cherries, with toasty oak and hints of the classic Burgundian meaty notes. Extremely broad, the rich mid palate leads to a long, persistent finish to create a complex and intense Pinot Noir with substantial ripeness and deep texture. This Pinot Noir will grow even more graceful with extended cellaring for at least ten years.

The vintage produced 410 (750ml) cases, available in our unique four-bottle laydown box, and was offered in 3-liter bottles in limited quantities.
