1998 Archery Summit Estate Pinot Noir

 Description   Press Acclaim

ORIGIN: A true marriage of Burgundian clones and tradition with Oregon terroir is displayed in this exquisite Pinot Noir blended from the estate vineyard surrounding our winery in the Red Hills of Dundee. The 1998 Archery Summit Estate is the culmination of our extensive research in establishing the best combinations of vines, rootstock, soils and microclimates and exemplifies our continued pursuit to craft America’s premier Pinot Noir.

VINEYARD: All grapes from this single estate vineyard, with south to southwest exposure, come from Dijon clones 113, 114, 115, 667 and 777. The steep terrain and the Jory soil contribute to the great ripeness of fruit and depth of the wine. Our narrow-spaced vineyard yielded only .8 tons per acre in 1998 which was an exceptionally low yielding vintage.

WINEMAKING: Crafted in our 100% gravity flow facility, this wine was vinified by cold soaking the grapes with 25% whole clusters and native yeast fermentation. The cap was gently punched down three times per day. After aging in 100% new, heavily toasted François Frères French oak barrels for 14 months, the wine was bottled in late December 1999 unfined and unfiltered.

TASTING NOTES: The color of the 1998 Archery Summit Estate is a dark royal purple and opaque from the rim to the center. Layers of flavors are delivered with aromas of rich ripe cassis, blackberries, raspberries, ripe Bing cherries, flowers, spices and minerals. Firm ripe tannins support a massive amount of sweet, ripe fruit. Deep and concentrated, this wine has an extremely thick and broad mid-palate that leads to an extremely long finish. This is truly a collector’s wine.

This vintage only produced 375 cases, available in our unique four-bottle lay down box, and was offered in 3-liter bottles in limited quantities.
