ORIGIN: The Red Hills Estate vineyard has moderate slopes, shallow Jory soils, and southern exposure. It produces one of our finest vineyard designated wines. The terroir of one of the premier sites in the Red Hills of Dundee is expressed uniquely in the aromas and flavors of this wine.
VINEYARD: This wine comes from 23 year-old plantings of self-rooted Pommard clone Pinot Noir and a small amount of our new plantings of Dijon clones 113, 115 and 777. Helped by low yields and great weather throughout the growing season and harvest, the 2000 vintage gave us great ripe fruit that showcased the delicacy of this estate beautifully. Very concentrated, intense and structured the 2000 Red Hills Estate will be the most age worthy wine we have made from this vineyard yet.
WINEMAKING: We use only native yeasts for fermentation, and the resulting wine is very impressive and represents the essence of our Red Hills Estate. The wine was vinified traditionally by utilizing 36% whole clusters and cold soaking in advance of fermentation. The wine was aged for 14 months in new, heavily-toasted François Frères and Rousseau French oak barrels. Gently crafted in our 100% gravity flow facility from the arrival of the fruit to bottling, this wine is unfined and unfiltered.
TASTING NOTES: Initially, aromas of blackberries, black cherries, cassis and clean earth dominate the layered and powerful nose. These notes later deepen to reveal marion berries, smoke, very ripe raspberries and blue fruits. The flavors in the wine mirror the aromatics, but are buttressed by firm ripe tannins. A very rich mid palate leads to a long classic finish. The 2000 Red Hills Estate is developing beautifully and we look forward with great anticipation to watching this wine age long after it has be bottled.
This vintage produced only 624 cases, available in our unique six-bottle box. It is also offered in 3-liter bottles in limited quantities.
