2001 Red Hills Estate Pinot Noir

 Description   Press Acclaim

ORIGIN: The Red Hills Estate vineyard has moderate slopes, shallow Jory soils, and southern exposure. It produces one of our finest vineyard designated wines. The terroir of one of the premier sites in the Red Hills of Dundee is expressed uniquely in the aromas and flavors of the wine.

VINEYARD: This wine comes from 24-year-old plantings of self-rooted Pommard clone Pinot Noir and the newer Dijon clone 115 grown on our south-facing Red Hills Estate. Helped by low yields and great weather throughout the growing season and harvest, the 2001 vintage gave us great ripe fruit that showcased the delicacy of this estate beautifully.

WINEMAKING: The fermentation for the 2001 Red Hills Estate was conducted in the traditional Archery Summit style. We use only native yeasts for fermentation. The resulting wine is very impressive and represents the essence of our Red Hills Estate. Using 40% whole clusters, the fruit was cold-soaked for five days before primary fermentation was allowed to proceed. Primary fermentation was conducted in tank entirely by indigenous yeasts, during which time tanks were manually punched down 1-6 times per day. After fermentation the wine was aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 14 months prior to bottling in January 2003. Gently crafted in our 100% gravity flow facility from the arrival of the fruit to bottling, this wine is unfined and unfiltered.

TASTING NOTES: This wine opens with a complex nose of bright cherry, brown baking spice and minerals. The palate opens smoothly into flavors of ripe plum, baked raspberry, allspice, clove and meat. The tannins are supple and integrated and lend depth and weight to this focused and elegantly shaped wine. The finish is long and persists with red fruit compote and minerals. Elegant and complex, the 2000 Red Hills Estate is ready to be enjoyed now through the next five to ten years.

This vintage produced 1,921 six-bottle cases and 30 3-liter bottles.
