ORIGIN: A true marriage of Burgundian tradition with Oregon terroir is displayed in this exquisite Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from Archery Summit Estate, the vineyard surrounding our winery in the Red Hills of Dundee. This 16-acre vineyard property was planted at Archery Summit’s inception in 1993. It is the culmination of our extensive research in establishing the best combinations of vines, rootstock, soils and microclimate and exemplifies our continued pursuit to craft America’s premier Pinot Noir.
VINEYARD: The grapes were harvested by hand September 27, 2002. The 2002 Archery Summit Estate Pinot Noir is crafted from Pommard clones blended with Dijon clones 114 and 115, all grown on our south-facing Archery Summit Estate vineyard. Our vineyards are farmed organically, which ensures highest possible quality of the fruit. The 2002 vintage produced wines with rich intensity.
WINEMAKING: The grapes were hand-sorted and fermented with 33% whole clusters to showcase the ripe fruit. Prior to allowing fermentation to proceed, the fruit was cold-soaked for eight days to aid in the extraction of color, tannin and flavor. Primary fermentation was conducted in a combination of oak and stainless steel tanks entirely by indigenous yeasts. During fermentation, tanks were manually punched down one to four times per day. The 2002 Archery Summit Estate was aged in 100% new François Frères oak barrels for 15 months, and was moved throughout our facility entirely by gravity. This gentle handling of our Pinot Noir protects the wines’ subtle nuances. Bottling was conducted on January 23rd of 2004, without fining or filtration.
TASTING NOTES: The 2002 Archery Summit Estate Pinot Noir possesses an intense scarlet color and opens with a complex nose of black fruits, smoke, and earth. The broad palate is focused with flavors of black currant, black cherry, boysenberry, exotic spice, and cocoa. The tannins, although powerful, are balanced and lend structure and weight to this intense wine. The finish is long and persists with flavors of cherry compote, iron and plum. The 2002 Archery Summit Estate Pinot Noir is a complex and focused wine for serious collectors, and may be cellared for six to twelve years.
This vintage produced 580 six-bottle cases, 120 magnums, and 30 3-liter bottles.
